Mwakasungula in Brunei for trials

Flames midfielder Hellings Mwakusungula left the country quietly on Saturday for Asia to undergo two weeks trials at Kingdom of Brunei’s side DPMM Football Club.

The Silver Strikers holding midfielder missed his team’s last weekend’s TNM Super League assignments when the bankers lost 1-0 to Nomads and drew with Zomba United one-all.

Mwakasungula posted about his trip on facebook and said that Brunei was a nice place to be.

However, Mwakasungula was non-committal to disclose the agent who facilitated the trials.

“I will be here up to next week. I will give you full details once I sort out everything,” he said.

According to information on internet, DPMM was officially established in 2000. The club started out as a college football team in 1994.

Silver Strikers coach Dan Dzinkambani said Mwakasungula missed the league matches because he had travelled out for a holiday.

Mwakasungula, who had a stint with South African Premier Soccer League Outfit Swallows, has been finding it tough to earn a regular place at Silver as he has to battle for the starting position with the likes of Harvey Mkacha and Peter Mwenda.

The arrival of Silvers latest acquisition Frank Banda from Civo United has also made life difficult for the Flames player.

Despite failing to be on the starting line-up for most of Silver games, Mwakasungula is still considered as one of the pillars of the national soccer team.

AFF U19 C’SHIP: NO BREAK FOR BRUNEI EVEN DURING RAMADHAN

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (14 Aug 2011) – Even during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadhan, there is no break for the Brunei national Under-19 squad as they upped the ante in preparation for the AFF Under-19 Championship which will be held in Yangon, Myanmar next month.

The AFF U19 Championship will be played out on 8-21 Sept 2011.

Chief coach Zainuddin Kassim admitted that the lack of time is an issue but something which they will be working hard to overcome.

“Of course we don’t have enough time to train,” said Zainuddin.

“We didn’t even have time to conduct trials in every district. The players here are mostly from Brunei-Muara and we only had three trials, two at the Balapan Track & Field, Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas and one at Berakas Secondary School.

“Nevertheless, I think this is the country’s best group of U19 players. For me the goal in Myanmar is to expose these players and give them a chance to gain experience at this level,” he added.

Training has been intensive for the Brunei team since the start of Ramadhan where they have continued their training at night after the breaking of fast.

For the Yangon meet, Brunei are in Group B against hosts Myanmar, Indonesia, Laos and Vietnam.

Group A are Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia and Cambodia.

Will we be seeing Brunei footballers at SEA Games?

WHISPERS in the wind reveal that Brunei may send a football team to the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Indonesia this November.

Sources close to the national team told The Brunei Times yesterday that a new Under-23 football side will be formed soon to contest in football competition of the biennial tournament.

Brunei recently formed two brand new junior teams the Under-23 and Under-19 sides to compete at next February Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy and next month's Asean Football Federation Under-19 Championship in Myanmar respectively.

It is understood that a new U-23 side would be formed for the SEA Games because the current teams are not experienced enough to compete at the Games' football competition which will be held at two venues, Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in central Jakarta and Lebak Bulus Stadium, south of the city.

The current U-23 and U-19 squads, who are training daily for the two tournaments, are filled by players selected during last month's tryouts.

With Malaysia as the defending football champions of the SEA Games, Brunei are keen to see where they stand among the Asean countries.

Malaysia took gold at the 2009 SEA Games in Laos when they defeated Vietnam 1-0 in the final an own goal by Vietnam's Mai Xuan Hop gifting the Asean champions their first SEA Games title in 20 years.

Besides that the Games will also provide invaluable experience as well as exposure for Brunei players, who were robbed of the chance to play in international matches after the Fifa ban in 2009.

The sources also said that red-hot Majra FC striker Adi Hj Md Said will be one of the players to don the Brunei colours at the Games.

In a Press release issued on April 23, the Department of Youth and Sports announced that 11 sports had made the cut for the Nov 11-22 biennial tournament in Indonesia.

The sports are: 10-pin bowling, cue sports, cycling, fencing, karate, pencak silat, petanque, sepak takraw, softball, taekwondo and wushu.

In charge of deciding which athletes represent Brunei in any contingent the Sultanate sends to regional and international tournaments, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports' national selection and evaluation committee met twice in April to discuss the sports the country would compete in at the 26th edition of the Games.

Apart from staff from the Department of Youth and Sports, the committee is also made up of officials from the Royal Brunei Armed Forces' Sports Council (MS ABDB), Royal Brunei Police Force Sports Council (MS PDB) and the Schools Sports Council (MSSS).

They had their first meeting on April 9 and the second on April 16.

The 11 sports are not set in stone though, as the Ministry can still pull the plug on the athletes' tickets if they fail to meet certain standards.

With football being the most popular sport in the country, Brunei will be keen to return to the international scene, especially the SEA Games.

Brunei youth teams ready for action

IT WILL be a busy month for Brunei's youth footballers come September with the announcement of the Sultanate's U-18 and U-15 squads participating in the Asian Schools Football Tournament, scheduled to be held in Ubon, Thailand from September 2-12.

The two divisions that will feature in said tournament are the 39th edition of the U-18 Asian Schools Football Tournament and the 6th edition for the U-15 respectively.

Brunei was supposed to host this year's edition of the Asian Schools Football Tournament but Thailand was named as a replacement due to International Federation of Association Football's (Fifa) ban on the Sultanate which was lifted only on May 30.

The U-18 team will feature many familiar faces for local football fans, with a majority of the players having represented Brunei in last year's Asian Schools Under-18 Football Championship in South Korea.

Unfortunately the team was not allowed to compete in said tournament due to Fifa's suspension.

The U-19 national team is also training hard in preparation for next month's Asean Football Federation (AFF) Under-19 Championship to be held in Myanmar.

Brunei's youth squads have been undergoing intensive training since the start of the year and the fasting month of Ramadhan is of no exception.

One such example of the teams' dedication is the U-18 squad training every evening at 9.15pm at the Sports School football pitch and the PTE Katok football pitch.

Brunei's participation in these tournaments will definitely be beneficial to the country's youth footballers, building them up for larger tournaments to come but earlier signs didn't look promising says national football coach Kwon Oh-son.

The lack of time to get the team ready is also against Brunei's sides, as pointed out by U-19 team coach Hj Zainuddin Hj Kassim.

"Of course we don't have enough time to train," said the coach.

"We didn't even have time to conduct trials in every district. The players here are mostly from Brunei-Muara and we only had three trials, two at the Balapan Track & Field, Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas and one at Berakas Secondary School," he said.

"Nevertheless, I think this is the country's best group of Under-19 players.

"For me the goal in Myanmar is to expose these players and give them a chance to gain experience at this level," he added.

The Bruneian team is pooled in Group B, together with hosts Myanmar, Indonesia, Laos and Vietnam.

The national team's last competition was the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifiers held in Sri Lanka in May 2009, where they lost all three of their group stage games. The Brunei Times

AFF UNDER-19: OH-SON RAISES CONCERN FOR BRUNEI

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (5 Aug 2011) – Next month’s AFF Under-19 Youth Championship in Myanmar will be the first international competition for Brunei Darussalam in two years but chief coach Kwon Oh-son is worried of the quality available to him.

Brunei was banned by international body FIFA in May 2009 and whose suspension was lifted only recently in May 2011.

But at a recent trial alongside Brunei’s Department of Youth and Sports for the AFF meet, the Korean stated that the signs do not look promising.

“No skill, no power, no insight about play, no midfield general, no finishing, no strong defense, no goalkeeper,” he sighed.

“There is no Iniesta (Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta) or Pique (Barcelona defender Gerard Pique) here that’s how I can explain it to you.

“There were four Brunei Youth Team (Under-18) players here and they played well. But the others look to have had no training and they aren’t playing well.

“Brunei has not played an international match in years so it will be hard to discover good players. Now we are selecting for the future and we need to make a continued investment in these players for at least two years. Keep them training. That’s the most important thing.”

A total of 66 players attended the trials with 29 players shortlisted.

Brunei are in Group B of the AFF U19 Youth Championship against hosts Myanmar, Indonesia, Laos and Vietnam.

In Group A are Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia and Cambodia.
