THE Department of Youth and Sports is holding trials today to select players for the national Under-21 football team competing at the 15th Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Pahang, Malaysia.
The trials will kick-off at 8pm at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas and players from all over the country are encouraged to participate.
National football coach Kwon Oh-son (pic), who helped the nation clinch its first Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy (HBT) title this year, will head a team of coaches from the Department of Youth and Sports at tonight's trials.
The trials are open to anyone born in 1991 or later. Those interested are required to bring along their identity card.
It is understood that the Under-21 players that represented the Sultanate in the HBT will be trying out for the selection as well.
"Basically we need good strikers and we are also looking for potential newcomers in the team. SUKMA will start soon and we need to do this as soon as possible," Brunei's HBT team manager Hj Faisal Hj Eusoff told The Brunei Times yesterday.
"We need to identify potential new players and we still need to trim the team to start training," he said.
Further trials in the other three districts will also be held.
"The (Brunei-Muara) trials will be held from April 18 to 29. We will be going to Tutong on Friday (April 20). For the Belait District, it will be on Sunday (April 22) and for Temburong, it will be on April 27.
"All trials for the three districts will start at 4pm and the final stage of the trials will be held at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium on April 29," he added.
Brunei is the only non-Malaysian contingent competing at this year's edition of the Games to be held from July 7-16 and this will be the first time the country is vying for the football crown. The Brunei Times
