Brunei to meet Indonesia in World Cup qualifiers

 Brunei Darussalam will play a two-legged tie against Indonesia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualification – Asian Football Confederation (AFC) First Round in October later this year.

Brunei will begin the first leg away at the Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta on October 12 before playing them again in the second leg at home on October 17.

The winner of the qualifying match will proceed to the second round in Group ‘F’ alongside Iraq, Vietnam and Philippines.

This was shared by Brunei Darussalam National Team Manager Pengiran Haji Mohd Waslimin bin Pengiran Setia Jaya Pengiran Haji Abdul Momin at a press conference at the Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (FABD) House.

FABD General Secretary Mohammad Shahnon bin Haji Mohd Salleh added, “For the FIFA Window in September 2023, Brunei Darussalam in principle through the FABD has agreed to hold two Tier 1 friendly matches.”

In preparing towards their upcoming qualifying match, Brunei Darussalam is expected to play two friendly matches against Timor Leste on September 6 as well as a visit to Hong Kong on September 11.

The national futsal team will take part in the AFC Futsal Asian Cup Qualifiers in Manama, Bahrain.

Brunei have been drawn in Group ‘F’ alongside Kuwait, Timor Leste and Bahrain as the designated host country.

Brunei will kick off against Kuwait at the Khalifa Sports City Hall in Manama, Bahrain on October 7 followed by a match against Bahrain two days later.

The Wasps will conclude their group stage campaign against Timor Leste on October 11.

Meanwhile, Brunei Under-23 National Team Co-Manager Haji Adee Suhardee bin Haji Muhidin shared that the national under-23 team will take part in two competitions this year namely the 2023 Asean Football Federation (AFF) Under-23 Championship and the 2024 AFC Under-23 Asian Cup qualification.

The regional AFF meet will be held from August 17 to 26 in Thailand while the AFC tournament will run from September 6 to 12 with Jordan designated as the hosts in Brunei’s group in Group ‘A’. The Young Wasps will begin their campaign in the AFF meet against Cambodia on August 17 at the Rayong Provincial Stadium followed by hosts Thailand on August 19 and lastly Myanmar on August 21.

This will be followed with the AFC tournament where Brunei have been drawn alongside Jordan, Syria and Oman.

They will play Jordan on September 6 followed by Syria on September 9 and Oman on September 12.

Prior to the major international competitions, the under-23 team will also be involved in a friendly match against Laos on August 12. – Fadhil Yunus
