Brunei Darussalam national football team enjoyed one of their finest results in recent memory following a 3-2 win against Vanuatu during a FIFA Series 2024 international match at the King Abdullah Sport City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia yesterday.
National star Hakeme Yazid Said thumped in a stupendous free-kick in the dying moments of the game that kept Vanuatu goalkeeper Dgen Leo off guard to seal a historic win.The Oceania side stormed into the lead in the 38th minute after Bong Kalo fired a fine effort past Brunei goalkeeper Haimie Anak Nyaring following a cutback from Jonathan Spokey Jack.
However, the Wasps bounced back as Syafiq Saifuddin Abdul Shariff opened his international account in the 52nd minute. It marked a special occasion for the DPMM FC talent who was making only his second appearance for his country after receiving his first call-up. Vanuatu’s defender Kerry Lawak helped regain his team the lead in the 70th minute but Nurikhwan Othman came up with the goods to level the tie just two minutes later.
The match was heading into a draw until Vanuatu conceded a free-kick deep into injury time, setting the scene for Hakeme to score the winning goal. Vanuatu defender Jack Clark said in a post-match interview, “It is good to test ourselves against different confederations and different types of football that you don’t normally get to expose to.”
He added, “We did well in patches and towards the end of the first half, we were much more composed and kept the ball a lot better.
But, I think we dropped a little bit in the second half and had lapses of concentration with the three goals from set-pieces.
“If we cut out those little lapses of concentration, I think we will come away with something more,” said Clark. – Fadhil Yunus
