Victors keep Super League hopes alive with stellar win
WIJAYA FC kept their qualification bid for the DST Super League alive yesterday, after defeating a determined Lun Bawang (PLBMB) side 3-0 at the Berakas Sports Complex in Berakas.
Jamrin Hj Johari was the first to get his name on the scoresheet by netting an early goal for Wijaya FC, courtesy of a confident finish in just the match's second minute.
Former AM Gunners and U-23 national player, Ak Anaqi Sufi Pg Hj Omar Baqi scored the second goal for Wijaya FC two minutes later, putting them in a commanding position throughout the first half.
The team's defenders also did well to deny Lun Bawang from mounting any form of threat at their half.
The first half ended without any real scoring opportunities after the first two goals was scored in the first four minutes of the game.
In the second half, Wijaya FC continued to control possession, with Lun Bawang rarely entering their opponents half.
Stern defence was evident from Lun Bawang's side, but their attacking force was hardly noticeable.
Wijaya FC's defence was rarely tested throughout the entire duration of the match.
With two minutes remaining in the game, Ak Anaqi Sufi scored the final goal for his team, putting the ball behind the keeper with a simple tap in to give his team the 3-0 win.
Lun Bawang head coach Mohd Amirul Afif told The Brunei Times, "We lacked match preparation, and we have fielded a majority of new young players for this season."
"They still need to undergo further training, and gain experience. We will try to work harder as a team for the next game."
Despite the win, Wijaya FC's team manager Ahyana Hj Md Tali, remained indifferent.
"Although we won, we still need to make further improvements, especially in our midfield and forward force. We had the tempo in certain times of the game, but we lost composure and flow of play at other times. This is what our team needs to work on for the next game," he said.
The win means that Wijaya FC's hope of booking a berth in the DST Super League is still within their grasp.
Lun Bawang however, are at the bottom of the table without a single point to their name.
Group D Miisa United will take on Najip FC at the Berakas Sports Complex at 8.15 pm tonight.
