THE Brunei football scene was abuzz with speculations of what would come to fruition, following a hotly circulated rumour of DPMM FC interested in the services of Australian football legend Harry Kewell.
Unverified rumours have suggested that the Australian will be paid $1.2 million but football fans in the Sultanate remain divided on whether or not this is the right decision for Brunei's only professional sports club.
"I heard from a friend that DPMM FC wants to import Harry Kewell, I think thats a good move since he is a free agent at the moment," said Mohd Jamil Rafi
Mohd Jamil, however, felt that the Australian would probably look at other clubs from other countries first, taking into account Brunei's recent suspension from FIFA.
Kewell has received 58 caps and scored 17 goals for the Australian national team.
Another DPMM FC supporter Hj Hadi Hj Zulkiffli felt that the $1.2 million price tag was just too expensive.
"$1.2 million to pay just one player is too heavy... with that kind of money you can bring in younger imports with more potential for the team," said the 34-year-old.
Yusri Hj Jamain echoed his sentiments. "I think it would be better to use the money to fix up our stadium or to put up a new roof so that the audience will be protected from the rain," said Yusri.
Other DPMM FC supporters, however, felt that the presence of an experienced world class player would be highly beneficial to the team. "In my opinion, he is quite cheap compared to other top level footballers and this will surely increase the attendance at the stadium," said Abdul Khalid Saiful.
Football enthusiast Khairul Yassin felt that Kewell would improve the Brunei side's chances in the Singapore League. "It's a great idea especially since the Singapore League looks to be getting tougher. DPMM FC needs to hold on to the high level of play and achievement from last season," he said.
Official representatives from DPMM FC have yet to report or comment on the rumours.
DPMM FC recently signed two new players, Portuguese striker Joao Vitor Rocha De Carvalho Moreira and Guadeloupean midfielder Stephane Auvray.
The squad are looking forward to bettering their second place finish in this year's edition of the Singapore League after they lost their final game of the season to Balestier Khalsa FC 2-0 at home last month.
