Brunei beat Vanuatu 3-2
Brunei Darussalam national football team enjoyed one of their finest results in recent memory following a 3-2 win against Vanuatu during a FIFA Series 2024 international match at the King Abdullah Sport City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia yesterday.
National star Hakeme Yazid Said thumped in a stupendous free-kick in the dying moments of the game that kept Vanuatu goalkeeper Dgen Leo off guard to seal a historic win.The Oceania side stormed into the lead in the 38th minute after Bong Kalo fired a fine effort past Brunei goalkeeper Haimie Anak Nyaring following a cutback from Jonathan Spokey Jack.
However, the Wasps bounced back as Syafiq Saifuddin Abdul Shariff opened his international account in the 52nd minute. It marked a special occasion for the DPMM FC talent who was making only his second appearance for his country after receiving his first call-up. Vanuatu’s defender Kerry Lawak helped regain his team the lead in the 70th minute but Nurikhwan Othman came up with the goods to level the tie just two minutes later.
The match was heading into a draw until Vanuatu conceded a free-kick deep into injury time, setting the scene for Hakeme to score the winning goal. Vanuatu defender Jack Clark said in a post-match interview, “It is good to test ourselves against different confederations and different types of football that you don’t normally get to expose to.”
He added, “We did well in patches and towards the end of the first half, we were much more composed and kept the ball a lot better.
But, I think we dropped a little bit in the second half and had lapses of concentration with the three goals from set-pieces.
“If we cut out those little lapses of concentration, I think we will come away with something more,” said Clark. – Fadhil Yunus

Bermuda wins 2-0 against Brunei in FIFA Series match
Brunei Darussalam’s national football team fell to a 2-0 defeat against Bermuda yesterday during a FIFA Series match at the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The CONCACAF member representative had the chance to open the scoring in the 16th minute through a free-kick but Brunei number one goalkeeper Haimie Anak Nyaring parried the ball away for a corner.
As Bermuda launched waves of attacks, forward Kane Chrichlow hit the side-netting after being played in with a neat pass by a teammate.
The relentless Bermuda got closer to scoring as Roger Lee struck the post after picking up a loose ball on the edge of the box.
Brunei made some changes in the half an hour mark as Razimie Ramlli and Abdul Hariz Herman made way for Hariz Danial Khallidden and Faturrahman Emran.
With Bermuda making numerous attacks in the game, the Wasps had a chance to take a surprise lead as Hakeme Yazid Said shot high after reacting to a cross from Fakharrazi Hassan.
In the second half, the Gombey Warriors finally ended Brunei’s resistance as midfielder Aunde Todd planted a header through a corner in the 81st minute.
Brunei’s goalkeeper Haimie Anak Nyaring pulled a great save to deny substitute Jai Bean with a header following good work on the flanks from the ever-present Djair Parfitt.
It was the perfect end for Parfitt who closed the game out by skipping past Brunei defenders and curling a shot into the top corner.
