AFF Cup - Philippines 5-1 Brunei
In the meantime at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, the Philippines crushed Brunei Darussalam 5-1 to pick up their first win in the group following their loss to Cambodia in their opening tie a few days earlier.
In-form Kenshiro Daniels opened the scoring for Josep Ferre’s side in the seventh minute before Sandro Reyes found the second five minutes later.
A left-foot stunner from Jesus Melliza and a double from substitute Sebastian Rasmussen after the interval gave the Azkals a 5-1 win as Razimie Ramlli’s goal proved a mere consolation for Brunei DS.
The result means the tightly contested Group A now has four teams level on three points as the Philippines joined Indonesia, Cambodia and defending champions Thailand among the nations to have posted a win already in the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022.
“We needed the three points. It was important that we win today. The players were excellent on and off the ball. I would like to thank the fans who came today. We really felt their support,” added Philippines head coach Josep Ferre.

Draw inspiration from World Cup underdogs, says FABD Chief
Fadhil Yunus
The national football team were encouraged to take inspiration from the FIFA World Cup 2022 underdogs stories ahead of their match against Thailand in the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Mitsubishi Electric Cup on December 20.
Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (FABD) President Pengiran Haji Matusin bin Pengiran Haji Matasan drew attention to the string of shocking results produced by lower ranked teams during this year’s World Cup.
During the group stages, Asian minnows Saudi Arabia pulled off a major upset when they beat a Lionel Messi-led Argentina 2-1.
Japan stunned Germany and Spain; Tunisia registering a famous 1-0 victory over reigning world champions France; Cameroon edged world number one Brazil; South Korea netting a last-gasp winner over Portugal.
However, it was Morocco’s deep run into the semi-finals that earned widespread admiration among the wider football community, having beaten Spain and left global superstar Cristiano Ronaldo in tears by knocking out Portugal.
Pengiran Haji Matusin said, “Our team should take heart from the performance of the underdogs and perform with confidence. I am sure the coach looks forward to a credible team performance.”
The national team will not be able to play in front of the home fans as their matches will be designated at the KLFA Stadium, with Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium currently undergoing refurbishment.
The president said, “It is highly regretted with sadness that we could not play home matches at home. However, this should not dampen our spirit to give the very best.”
He also urged the Bruneian community residing in Kuala Lumpur, Phnom Penh and Manila- where Brunei will be playing- to come out in full force to support the team.
Meanwhile, National Head Coach Mario Rivera Campesino – who guided Brunei to their first appearance in the main draw of the Asean meet since 1996 – echoed the president’s sentiment on local fans not being able to watch the team play on home ground.
He said, “It is a shame that we can’t play in our stadium in front of many Bruneians to enjoy an amazing environment.
“But our players will give their best and in attitude and passion, none of the teams will win over Brunei.”

The Brunei Darussalam national football team are currently stepping up their training preparations in anticipation of the upcoming Asean Football Federation (AFF) Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022 (AMEC 2022) later this month.
The Wasps, led by Head Coach Mario Rivera Campesino and his coaching team, held a training session at the Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex yesterday.
Team Manager Pengiran Haji Mohd Waslimin bin Pengiran Setia Jaya Pengiran Haji Abdul Momin and Assistant Team Manager Ah Chua Bangau were present to oversee the preparations.

Among those who were seen in training were several DPMM FC players as well as several players from domestic clubs.
Some 26 to 30 players are currently involved in training ahead of the squad announcement to determine who will be on the plane to Kuala Lumpur.
The final squad, which is expected to consist 23 players as well as 14 officials, is due to leave the country on December 12, where they will then enter the final phase of their pre-tournament preparations.
Brunei will be based in the Malaysian capital at least for the entirety of the group stage, where they will be playing their home matches at the KLFA Stadium.
Mario’s charges is also expected to play a sparring match against a Malaysian-based club a day after their arrival at the UPM Stadium.
The players had been called up for international duty since March 2022 before they played their first international match against Laos.
The national team had since played six international matches, with the 1-0 victory against Laos during the Tri-Nations series last September serving as confidence booster ahead of the crucial AMEC qualification round against Timor Leste.
Brunei produced one of their biggest wins in international history after beating Timor Leste 6-2 in the first leg, en route to qualification to the group draw of the AMEC 2022.
The Wasps will make their first competitive appearance in Asean football in 26 years against Thailand on December 20.
They will then travel to the Philippines to face the Azkals three days later before returning to their adopted home stadium to meet Indonesia on December 26. Brunei will conclude their group stage campaign against Cambodia away on December 29.
