 James Kon

The Brunei Darussalam national football team will face the Brunei Super League All Stars team in a friendly match at Track and Field, Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex today at 8pm.

During a press conference, National Team Manager Pengiran Haji Waslimin bin Pengiran Setia Jaya Pengiran Haji Abdul Momin said “We want to test out our players against the Brunei Super League All Stars. It won’t be an easy match against the best of the league.”

Brunei Super League All Stars Team Manager Mohd Nazib bin Haji Ali said “The selection process for All Stars was quite tough. We were given one week to prepare. We looked for fit players through club managers and coaches.

“We selected players from Kota Rangers, MS ABDB, Indera FC, Kasuka FC and so on. Most are new names.”

Mohd Nazib said the national squad is well prepared based on the recent match against
Kasuka FC.

Meanwhile, All Stars only had three training sessions and one friendly match within a week leading to limited time for preparation and building team chemistry.

Brunei Super League All Stars coach Rosanan bin Abdullah Samak said, “We will do our best against the national team and I convey my gratitude to Kasuka FC, MS ABDB and other clubs for allowing their players join the team.”

Mohd Nazib hoped for Brunei National coach Datuk K Rajagobal to look for some of the best players in Brunei Super League All Stars team to add to the national squad.

The entry fee is BND5 and all proceeds will to a local charity. The match will adhere to Ministry of Health directives where only 500 fans are allowed in the venue. Temperature checks will be at the entrance and fans must also wear face masks.

Second-half substitutes inspire national team to 4-0 win over Kasuka

A quartet of substitutes came off the bench to inspire the Brunei Darussalam national team to a 4-0 victory over local club Kasuka FC in a friendly football match at the Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas on Friday.

The friendly match marked a first live football match in the country for over a year following the implementation of Level 5 (New Normal) de-escalation plan, which took effect earlier this month.

Both sides were reduced to 10 men just shy of the break after national forward Abdul Azizi bin Ali Rahman and Kasuka defender Samuel Kojo Abbey were given their marching orders in the 43rd minute by referee Amdillah Zainuddin.

After a goalless first half, Hamizan Aziz bin Sulaiman opened the scoring in the 54th minute before fellow substitute Mohd Najib bin Haji Tarif doubled the lead in the 73rd minute.

Razimie bin Ramlli got into the act in the 80th minute before Maziri bin Maidin concluded the scoring four minutes from time.

Left back Muhd Hanif Farhan bin Azman was given the nod while Asri bin Haji Aspar, who earned his first cap in the World Cup qualifiers against Mongolia, started in centre midfield.

With Muhammad Azwan Ali Rahman installed as captain, his young DPMM FC teammate Hakeme Yazid bin Said led the line upfront alongside Abdul Azizi.

The match also enabled Kasuka, who have been drawn against FC Chanthabouly in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup, to introduce their new foreign arrivals including Japanese goalkeeper Wada Shota, Nigerian defender Babatunde Fatai and Ghanaian defender Samuel Kojo.

Ivory Coast midfielder Franck Alwin Yapo and Liberian forward Leon Sullivan Taylor were already part of the Kasuka team in the Brunei Super League last year before it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Wasps have also been scheduled to play an all-star team next at the same venue
on Tuesday.

DPMM FC TO COMPETE IN BRUNEI SUPER LEAGUE

 Yee Chun Leong

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

DPMM FC are set to participate in the upcoming Brunei Super League.

The Brunei side had to sit out the Singapore Premier League for the second straight season due to Brunei’s COVID-19 travel restrictions.

All sports events can be now carried out in Brunei following the implementation of Level 5 (New Normal) de-escalation plan from March 8 and the National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) had announced that the country’s top-tier football competition is slated to begin on June 20.

“I’m really looking forward to playing in the Brunei Super League,” said DPMM FC coach Adrian Pennock in an interview with BruSports News earlier today.

“It’s been over a year since we played our last competitive game,” he added.

DPMM FC last played competitively in a 2-0 victory over Tampines Rovers FC at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium in Berakas on March 6 last year.

They have been busy prepping themselves since early this year and Pennock felt that his charges are ready for the challenge.

“We’ve been preparing since January 6th to play in the Singapore Premier League but obviously because of restrictions we couldn’t travel,” said Pennock.

“So the boys have trained hard since then and have been fantastic all pre-season.

“Now we have to lower training times and days to get the balance right to start competitive for June,” added the Englishman.

Pennock revealed that there won’t be many changes to their 2019 title-winning squad.

They have also retained their trio of imports defender Charlie Clough, forward Andrei Varankou and goalkeeper Emerson Conceicao for this year’s campaign.

“The squad has been tinkered with a little bit but the majority of the squad is the same as the last two seasons,” said the 49-year-old.

“I’m looking to get younger players through if we can but they have to be good enough,” he concluded.

Indera SC make early preparations

 Fadhil Yunus

Indera Sports Club (ISC) have made early preparations for future competitions through continuous training sessions, despite the unconfirmed resumption of the Brunei Super League season, the club announced recently.

Despite the wait, the club stressed the importance of lifting the players’ spirit and stepping up their fitness levels.

“We want to see the players be able to regain the ability to perform basic touches of their technical game,” said ISC Team Manager Pengiran Abdul Azim bin Pengiran Haji Othman said during a training session at the NFABD Football Field.

While complying with standard operating procedure set by the authorities, the players were seen training hard in preparation for a possible domestic competition.

Pengiran Abdul Azim said the squad have made positive steps with the improvements and fitness progress, and will continue to strengthen the team.

Last year, the Brunei Super League was cancelled to comply with measures to curb the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak.

DPMM FC to sit out 2021 SPL season

 Fadhil Yunus

DPMM FC will not be competing in the 2021 Singapore Premier League (SPL) season due to travel restrictions impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) confirmed on Tuesday.

The Brunei club informed the FAS on their withdrawal, which was similar to their omission last October when the league restarted without the then-champions.

“Both parties made significant efforts to explore mutually satisfactory arrangements for DPMM FC’s participation in the league, but it is unfortunate that these did not work out,” the FAS statement said.

“While the situation is unfortunate, the FAS appreciates that DPMM FC has done everything possible to resume its place in the SPL, but has to abide by Brunei’s national policies set out to contain the virus.

“DPMM FC remains an integral part of the SPL and we look forward to welcoming them back next season,” the FAS added.

The SPL, which is entering its 26th season, will kick off on March 13 with eight teams.

Matches will be played behind closed doors. However, the FAS will review this in consultation with the authorities once the season progresses.

Only essential match-day personnel will be allowed in the venue and comprehensive protocols will remain in place for their safety.

Meanwhile, the quota for foreign imports has been revised with effect from the 2021 season in line with the requirements of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) club competitions.

Each SPL club, excluding Albirex Niigata (S) and Young Lions, is allowed to register a maximum of four foreign players with no age restrictions, of whom at least one should be of the nationality of an AFC member association.

The number of substitutions for each team will revert to three while the maximum number of substitutes players allowed in the bench will also revert to seven.

Fixture schedules have been released with reigning holders Albirex Niigata (S) opening their title defence with a clash against Hougang United, and Lion City Sailors taking on Tampines Rovers FC.

DPMM FC’s last match in the SPL was a 2-0 home victory against Tampines Rovers FC on March 6 last year, but the result was annulled following their withdrawal.
