Selangor beat DPMM FC 3-2 on penalties in Aceh

Sunday, December 23, 2012

SELANGOR denied DPMM FC the silverware as they triumphed 3-2 on penalties in the Governor Aceh Trophy third-place playoff after both teams were locked to a 1-1 draw at regulation time.

Mohd Amalul Ariffin Shah Said, Rosmin Hj Khamis and Mohd Hendra Azam Mohd Idris missed penalties for DPMM FC before Francis Forkey stepped up to convert the decisive spot-kick at the Harapan Bangsa Stadium in Aceh provincial capital Banda Aceh, Indonesia, yesterday.

DPMM FC have only themselves to blame for missing out on a chance to finish on the top of the podium in the tournament when they failed to hold on to their one goal lead, courtesy of Shahrazen in the 28th minute.

Brunei's only professional football team ended their campaign winless in the competition after losing three matches and one draw.

They started out their campaign last Saturday with a 4-2 loss to Indonesian Premier League (IPL) Champions Semen Padang FC. They were held to a 1-1 draw by Kelantan on the next day.

DPMM FC progressed to the last four as group runners-up after a draw was carried out with Kelantan since both teams share exactly the same statistics. However they were edged 3-2 by hosts Aceh United in the semi-finals on Wednesday. Shahrazen scored a double for DPMM FC in the defeat.

Selangor, meanwhile, opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Makassar United last Saturday. They fell to a 1-0 defeat to Aceh FC the next day but qualify to the semi-finals on goal difference.

The Malaysians then were denied a place in the final after losing to 3-1 to Semen Padang on Wednesday in the semifinals.
